Recommended Equipment for the Bighorn River
The following is a printable checklist to make sure you are prepared
for your trip to the Bighorn River:
- Fly Rod, Preferably a 5 weight, but you can get by with a 4
wt. or 6 wt.
- Fly Reel, Equipped with a weight forward or double taper floating
line.
- Waders, Breathable waders are great for warm days and cold water.
- Wader liners for those cold times.
- Boots. Felt soled boots preferably not cleated as the river
is very easy to wade.
- Rain Jacket, No time of year is immune from the occasional downpour.
- Clothing layers to be prepared for all possible conditions at
the time of your visit.
- Sunglasses, Preferably polarized to help with fishing.
- Alcoholic Beverages, Fort Smith is located in the middle of
the Crow Reservation where alcohol sales are prohibited. The nearest
sales of alcohol are in Hardin, MT 45 miles away so plan accordingly.
- Hat, Baseball cap or other brimmed hat.
- Gloves, Fingerless winter gloves for cold seasons
- Sunscreen and lip balm.
